They impose rules to follow for fishing and hunting. Maine is very strict with their policies.

Maine is known for its 17 million acres of forest, 711 mountains, 3500 miles of coastline, and 6000 lakes and ponds. This nature abundance makes Maine a destination for outdoor recreational activities all year round. Activities that can be enjoyed in the summer are hunting, fishing, biking, canoeing and kayaking, hiking as well as whitewater rafting, windjammer cruising and golf. Skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling are winter adventures.

Cast top water weedless lures deep into the lilly pads and floating vegetation and retrieve at different speeds. You can retreive the lure quickly, slowly the next time, try a jerk and stop, twitching also can prompt a strike.
Water depth is not an issue as the lake or pond cools. The fish are starting to gorge themselves for winter when the bait fish supply is minimal so they are on the prowl for any food source, be it shad, crayfish, frogs or even small birds and other reptiles.
One of the best soft plastic lures that has been working for me is the Zoom Watermelon Red Horny Toad, with a 2.0 Tru-Turn hook. Use the lightest toughest line you can and actually monofilament works well as it tends to float better over the vegetation. However, it is more prone to break-offs the secret is to use whatever line you are the most comfortable and confident in.

The big largemouth bass have gone deep. The small 1-2 pounders are up in shallow water. Crankbaits at 15-20 feet will certainly work well this time of year in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. So when selecting a crankbait make sure that it will get to the depth you need. This may also require a longer rod and braided line so that the lure can get down into the strike-zone. This time of year a Rapala #20 in gray shad and white w/orange belly and black back is an ideal bait.
