Lake Guntersville: Alabama

Lake Guntersville in Alabama is a quality bass fishery and home to numerous bass fishing tournaments including Bassmaster Elite Series events. The lake is located near the southernmost point of the Tennessee River, and is situated 150 miles west of Atlanta, GA, 150 miles south of Nashville, TN,  70 miles northeast of Birmingham, AL and just 30 miles south of Huntsville, AL. Bass & Crappie fishing are the most popular sports on the lake. There is a significant population of bluegills, additionally the Alabama Game and Fish Division stock striper bass in Guntersville.

At 69,100 acres and stretching for 75 miles Lake Guntersville is Alabama’s largest lake. There are numerous free boat ramps around the perimeter of the lake. Lake fish habitat includes hydrilla weed beds and milfoil any of which can produce trophy bass on topwater lures. In fact the population of largemouth bass between 12 and 24 inches has improved each sample year since 2001, and is consistenly higher than it has ever been since sampling began on this impoundment.

Guntersville is a shallow lake and full of numerous types of aquatic plants. This gives bass plenty of places to hide from anglers. Learning to fish the lake cannot be accomplished easily, it will take several outings to find quality fish. Just to know where you can fish and navigate on this body of water takes time. Another issue is fishing pressure during the spring months when everyone is out trying to bag a trophy largemouth. Plus the high number of tournament events would make a first time visit wise to avail themselves of one of the local guide services.

Another consideration is nature itself, bluebird skies, cold fronts, temperature swings can drastically impact fish production, especially on a shallow water lake. Heavy rain for several days can stain the lake for many days following such an event. Timing will be everything when it comes to springtime bass fishing on Lake Guntersville. Every month there will be conditions that are in the fisherman’s favor, when it comes to trying to get that elusive ten-pounder which the lake can be stingy in giving up. My point is don’t give up if you have a bad trip to Guntersville, there are too many fisherman who have caught there trophy fish here and why it is consistently rated as one of the best bass fisheries in the country.
